Absolutely. I read a book several years ago that basically asked how could so many ordinary people have been sucked in by nazism? It concluded, that mainly, people got sucked in, little by little, and by the time they realised the truth of it, everyone was in too deep; the few people who did dare to speak out were made examples of and the rest were too afraid to try and challenge it.

Doesn't fan fic lead to some interesting discussions.
