I always feel that this is what happened with the vast majority of the german army in WWII. You turn up for duty at a death camp, and get assigned to seeing people off trains and segregating them male/female. It's not so bad. And then another duty, and another, until you're too far in to protest. And you know that, if you do, you'll be shot and it'll carry on anyway.
